A Day in Luxembourg: Castles, Cobbled Streets, and Scenic Views

22/09/2022

My trip to Luxembourg was the perfect day getaway from Brussels, offering a completely different atmosphere and experience. Though it's one of Europe's smallest countries, Luxembourg packs in so much charm and history that it's hard not to be impressed.

I started my day exploring the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with its beautiful cobblestone streets and picturesque squares. Walking through this area felt like stepping back in time, with medieval buildings and a serene vibe that contrasted nicely with the bustling energy of Brussels. The views from the Chemin de la Corniche—often called 'the most beautiful balcony in Europe'—were simply stunning, offering a panoramic view of the city's lush valleys and fortifications.

One of the highlights of my visit was exploring the Grand Ducal Palace, home to the Grand Duke of Luxembourg. Though I couldn't go inside, just seeing the palace's grand exterior was enough to feel the regal presence of this small but mighty country.

As the day went on, I made sure to visit Bock Casemates, the underground tunnels that were once part of the city's defense system. It's hard to imagine how this network of tunnels played such a key role in Luxembourg's military history, but walking through them gave me a sense of the city's strategic importance.

By the afternoon, I took a leisurely stroll along the Pétrusse Valley, enjoying the scenic greenery and peaceful vibe. It was the perfect way to wind down before catching the train back to Brussels.

Luxembourg is small enough that one visit is enough to see most of its highlights—whether you're there for a day or two. It's a lovely country to explore, but I wouldn't necessarily say it's a place you need to return to often. Still, I'm glad I made the trip, and it's definitely worth a stop if you're nearby!
