A Weekend in Brussels: Waffles, Landmarks, and Moules-Frites
Brussels is often known for its role in European politics, but during my weekend visit, I discovered so much more—delicious food, stunning architecture, and a unique charm that truly surprised me.
My adventure started with a visit to the Grand Place, a breathtaking square surrounded by beautiful old buildings. Even though I'd seen photos before, standing there in person was surreal. The ornate details of the guildhalls and the towering Town Hall were truly impressive. But the Grand Place was just the beginning.
From there, I spent hours roaming the charming streets of Brussels, exploring everything from historic sites to high-end shops. I wandered through Avenue Louise, Brussels' famous luxury shopping street, lined with designer boutiques and chic cafés. Even if you're not shopping, the atmosphere is something to experience. The contrast of luxury and history makes Brussels feel like a city of many layers.
Of course, I had to check out the European Parliament, where I learned more about the political heart of Europe. Walking around the EU quarter gave me a glimpse of the city's modern side, with sleek buildings housing the institutions that shape the continent's future. It's fascinating to see such a blend of history and modern governance in one place.
One of the culinary highlights of my trip was trying moules-frites. I absolutely loved it! The fresh mussels paired with crispy fries were a match made in heaven, and it quickly became one of my favorite Belgian dishes. And, of course, no visit to Belgium would be complete without indulging in a Belgian waffle. I grabbed one from a street vendor, crispy and topped with rich chocolate—it was every bit as amazing as you'd imagine!
Unfortunately, my phone camera died early in the trip, and I didn't have another camera with me, so I couldn't capture as many photos as I'd hoped. Still, the experiences and memories from Brussels will stay with me long after the pictures would have. Whether it's the food, the history, or the unique energy, Brussels is a city that will surprise and delight you at every corner.
After exploring Brussels, I hopped on a train to Luxembourg, where I spent a full day discovering its own charm before heading back to Brussels. Stay tuned for my next post, where I'll share all about my day in Luxembourg and what made it such a memorable side trip!
