Half a Century of Countries: eSwatini (Swaziland) Marks My 50th Country!

18/01/2025

After 8 hours on the road, I've officially reached my 50th country—eSwatini! This moment feels incredible, not just because of the milestone, but because of the unique nature of the place that welcomed me: one of the last absolute monarchies in the world, where tradition, history, and natural beauty come together in a truly special way.

eSwatini, formerly known as Swaziland, is a small kingdom nestled in the heart of Southern Africa, and it offers a rare blend of vibrant culture and untamed landscapes. As I made my way through this peaceful country, I was struck by the vastness of its surroundings—rugged mountains, lush valleys, and dense forests—giving it the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere. Yet, there's something magical about that sense of isolation. There's a tranquility here that is hard to find in the more bustling parts of the world.

A Walk in the Kingdom

After arriving in eSwatini, I decided to take a little walk to stretch my legs after the long drive. I found myself wandering through a quiet wooded area, close to a village, where life felt simple and unhurried. The peacefulness of the surroundings was a stark contrast to the hustle of the road. As I walked through the trees, I was approached by a curious girl who asked if I would take her picture. She seemed excited about the interaction, and I was happy to oblige. In that moment, I realized how these small, unexpected encounters often become the highlights of my travels. Sometimes, it's not about the big landmarks or planned activities, but about the spontaneous moments that connect you with the people and places you're visiting.

Here's the result of our little impromptu photoshoot—such an unexpected, yet memorable, moment that perfectly captured the essence of travel for me!

A Kingdom of Rich History and Culture

eSwatini is far more than just picturesque landscapes and a peaceful way of life. It's a country steeped in tradition, with vibrant ceremonies and festivals that reflect its rich history. The Umhlanga Reed Dance, one of the country's most well-known cultural events, draws people from all over to witness the beauty of Swazi customs. The country is also home to impressive wildlife, including nature reserves like Malolotja and Mlawula, where one can explore diverse ecosystems, from wetlands to savannahs.

Why eSwatini? Why 50 Countries?

Reaching my 50th country feels like a huge achievement, but more importantly, it reminds me of how much the world has to offer. The people, the landscapes, the experiences—I'm continually amazed by how travel opens doors to understanding different cultures and ways of life. eSwatini is one of the last absolute monarchies in the world, and this adds a layer of intrigue and depth to my visit. The country's monarchy, led by King Mswati III, still plays a central role in the daily lives of its citizens. Being here has given me a new perspective on monarchy in the modern world, and it's been a humbling experience to witness how history and tradition continue to shape the present.

Looking Forward to More Adventures

While I'm excited to tick off another country on my list, this journey is about more than just the numbers. It's about the stories, the lessons, and the people I meet along the way. eSwatini may be my 50th country, but it's just the beginning of many more adventures to come. I can't wait to dive deeper into this country's culture, meet more incredible people, and continue making memories in places that are as unique and special as eSwatini.

Stay tuned as I continue my journey across the world, exploring places that aren't just on the map but are waiting to be discovered in the hearts of those who dare to venture off the beaten path.
