Safari Experiences from Rufiji River Camp – Day 1
The day started with a lovely transition from Zanzibar to mainland Tanzania. The destination? Nyerere National Park and Rufiji River Camp – and yes, we flew in a safari plane! Upon arrival at the charming "dirt strip," a short drive to the camp awaited us. There's no doubt now – we are in the heart of the bush!
Before checking in, we had to sign that we are here at our own risk. It's a friendly reminder that we are now guests in the animal kingdom. Elephants and hippos, in particular, may appear in the evenings, as the camp is not fenced. The idea is to truly let us feel like we are part of nature – exciting, right?
And for those who enjoy a bit more excitement: there are also a few snakes here, including the famous Black Mamba. It can grow up to 4.5 meters long and run faster than most of us (with a top speed of 20 km/h)! The recommendation is to stand completely still if you encounter one – but honestly, do you think I could manage that?
For added safety, a Maasai warrior accompanies us to and from our tents in the evening. From the common area to the tents, it's best to have an experienced guide who knows the bush better than anyone else.
Lunch today was also quite special, with a visit from two cute vervet monkeys! They were clearly curious and charming – a reminder of how close we are to the wildlife here.
My first safari experience was a river safari by boat. The river is packed with hippos and Nile crocodiles, so how tempting is a swim? Not exactly! The camp's pool is a much better alternative. In addition to the larger animals, the birdlife here is incredible. I've seen African Spoonbill, Goliath Heron, African Fish Eagle, Great White Pelican, Saddle-billed Stork, Malachite Kingfisher, Gray-headed Kingfisher, African Pygmy Goose, Nubian Woodpecker, and Bronze Mannikin – absolutely magical!
We ended the boat safari by coming ashore and enjoying a breathtaking sunset. A perfect ending to an adventurous day.
Now, I have to head to bed, as tomorrow a full-day game drive awaits. I can hardly wait! I'll fall asleep to the sounds of birds, crickets, and the occasional deafening roar of the many hippos splashing in the river basin.
Stay tuned for more adventures – I hope I can bring a smile to your face with my experiences!
Good night from the bush!
