Savoring the Vineyards: A Wine Lover’s Journey in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek
Our wine-tasting adventure began as we entered South Africa's famous "Wineland." The scenery was nothing short of breathtaking—endless hectares of vineyards lined the roads, complemented by fruit trees, berry bushes, and lavender fields. As we drove through this stunning landscape, I noticed a charming feature at the end of many rows of vines: roses. These delicate flowers serve an important purpose, acting as early warning systems for pests and diseases. By monitoring the roses, vineyard staff can detect potential problems early and protect their precious vines—a clever and beautiful touch.
I was fortunate to be accompanied by a friendly group: a couple from England, a couple from Scotland, and the brother of the woman from the Scottish couple. Although they were all twice my age or more, we connected easily. The reason it's so easy to bond with others on trips like this is our shared love of travel and wine—two passions that create instant camaraderie. Conversations flowed naturally, and sharing the wine-tasting experience together made the journey even more enjoyable.
Our first stop was Anura Vineyards, an estate known for its stunning views and exceptional range of wines. Nestled in the foothills of the Simonsberg Mountain, Anura is a family-owned vineyard that has been producing wine for over 30 years. The estate offers a variety of wine experiences, from guided tastings to a delightful restaurant with panoramic views of the vineyards. The tasting room, with its rustic charm and warm ambiance, was the perfect setting for us to enjoy a selection of sparkling, white, and red wines.
We were welcomed by Percy, our flamboyant host in his 60s, who was the perfect guide for our journey through Anura's wine offerings. With his witty humor and vast knowledge of wines, Percy kept us entertained with his anecdotes while explaining the unique characteristics of each wine. One of the standout experiences was tasting Anura's sparkling wines, which had a delightful effervescence and depth of flavor that set the tone for the day. The reds were equally impressive, showcasing the rich terroir of the region.
The estate itself is a picturesque blend of vineyards and natural beauty. I spent some time capturing the stunning views on camera, with lush green vines stretching out as far as the eye could see and the majestic mountain range providing a dramatic backdrop. The grounds were perfect for a leisurely stroll, and there was something truly serene about the place that made it feel like a peaceful retreat.
After Anura, we made our way to La Motte Winery, a more exclusive estate. However, this stop was a bit of a disappointment. The place felt too industrialized, and we didn't quite connect with the atmosphere. Even though the wines were priced much higher, none of us felt they measured up to the wines at Anura. Usually, I believe you get what you pay for, but in this case, it simply wasn't true. It was a bit of a letdown, but it didn't take away from the enjoyment of the rest of the day.
On the way back, everyone, except for our driver, had indulged just a bit too much in the wine. The car ride was so quiet you'd think we were all on a silent retreat—everyone taking a power nap. Every now and then, though, a soft snore would pierce the stillness, a humorous reminder of the tipsiness we were all feeling. It was a light-hearted, relaxing end to an otherwise fantastic day of wine tasting!
Tomorrow, it's time to head up to the Majestic Table Mountain! Stay tuned for the next adventure.
