The Gambia: The Smiling Coast of Africa – Arrival and First Day of Birdwatching

Arriving late in the evening to the serene coastal town of Bakau, I had just enough time to check into my accommodation and settle in before getting some much-needed rest. The excitement of the upcoming days, though, made it difficult to sleep. My birdwatching and wildlife-focused journey was about to begin, and I couldn't wait for the morning. 

For my week-long stay, Bakau served as the ideal base. Located on the northwestern tip of The Gambia, it offers a perfect mix of local culture, bustling markets, and beautiful coastal views. Its strategic position, close to the best birding spots and natural reserves, made it the perfect starting point for my wildlife adventure. Just a short distance from the capital Banjul, Bakau provided easy access to both natural and cultural landmarks while maintaining a relaxed coastal charm.

Meeting My Guide and the Journey to Kotu Creek

The first full day of birdwatching began bright and early. At exactly 07:00, Yankuba Jammeh, my guide for the week, arrived at the hotel. Yankuba is a personable, professional birdwatching guide with deep knowledge of Gambian wildlife. Based in Kotu Creek, a famous birding hotspot, he's been guiding birdwatchers since 2008. His passion for wildlife, cultivated during his early years volunteering at the Abuko Nature Reserve, combined with his experience as the former Secretary General of the Gambia Bird Guide Association, made me feel confident I was in expert hands.

Our first stop? The iconic Kotu Creek, situated just outside Bakau. The scenic wetlands, mangroves, and patches of woodland create an ideal habitat for a variety of bird species. The tranquil atmosphere, with the creek winding through palm trees and grasslands, was immediately captivating.

Upon arrival at Kotu Creek, I was greeted by the soft sounds of wading birds and the gentle rustling of leaves in the breeze. The stillness of the water mirrored the sky, creating a peaceful backdrop for birdwatching. As we followed the sandy trails that meandered along the creek, Yankuba expertly guided me to some incredible sightings. With each new bird we spotted, I became more immersed in the vibrant biodiversity that this area has to offer.

A real treat of the day was visiting the Gambia Birding Association's office, where Yankuba introduced me to his fellow guides. Their passion for birding and conservation shone through in their stories, and it was inspiring to meet such a dedicated group of individuals working to promote eco-tourism in the region. This tight-knit birding community is a key player in preserving Gambia's incredible biodiversity.

The day unfolded smoothly as we continued to explore different parts of the creek, taking in the rich birdlife and scenic beauty that surrounded us. Thanks to Yankuba's keen eyes and deep knowledge, I enjoyed a full and rewarding day of birdwatching, experiencing the natural wonders that make The Gambia a birdwatcher's paradise.

Wrapping Up with a Visit to Kachikally Museum

As the day neared its end, Yankuba introduced me to one last cultural highlight—a visit to the Kachikally Museum in Bakau. The museum provides a fascinating insight into The Gambia's rich cultural and historical heritage, showcasing everything from traditional crafts to local history. Nearby is the Kachikally Crocodile Pool, a sacred site believed to promote fertility. Although I didn't visit the pool itself, learning about its significance gave me a deeper understanding of the Gambian people's deep connection to nature and the reverence they hold for their wildlife and traditions.

Reflections on the First Day

After a long and fulfilling day, I returned to my hotel to review my photos and reflect on the experience. Editing the images and recalling the sightings from the day's excursion reminded me just how rich The Gambia's birdlife truly is. With batteries recharged, camera gear ready, and my curiosity piqued, I was eager for the next day's adventures, knowing that even more of The Gambia's wildlife treasures awaited me.
